💚Bile - how to improve production and flow

1. If you have gallstones, work with a knowledgeable ND or functional medical doctor to help address them SAFELY.

2. Support optimizing liver health, since that is where bile is formed in the first place!

3. Optimize bile production by ensuring a nutritive diet rich in sufficiency clean protein, healthy fats, colourful vegetables and fruits, quality complex carbs + sufficient hydration, while reducing the intake of processed + chemically burdened foods, refined sugars, excess alcohol and drugs.

4. Piggy backing on that good diet - key factors for bile production are amino acids like taurine and glycine, phosphatidylcholine, cholesterol, Vitamin A, C and D, electrolytes and minerals like sodium, phosphorous and copper.

5. Address an imbalanced microbiome and pathogenic microbes (fungus, candida, bacteria, mold, parasites)

6. Ingest bitter foods like lemons, arugula, artichoke, dandelion greens, grapefruit, radicchio, mustard greens, bitter melon etc

7. Mindfully use cholagogue herbs to stimulate bile flow like globe artichoke, wormwood, gentian, and milk thistle. (Best to do this under the supervision of an ND)

8. Address the effects of stress on the body. In TCM the gall bladder is the decision maker, and represents the courage to take action. Is your sense of self weakened? Do you second guess or have a hard time making decisions and taking action? Is there fear and timidity?

9. The Liver and gall bladder are a dynamic duo, so don't forget that ANGER is connected to the liver in TCM. Is there a suppression or unhealthy expression of anger, frustration, rage, irritability, or resentment?

So much can actually be related to poor bile flow. Because of it’s connection to the liver, and as I’ve mentioned before, the liver is VITAL for your health in so many ways - like for hormone regulation, cholesterol, detoxification, digestion etc.

Plus bile is necessary to emulsify fats and fat soluble vitamins which will impact immune health, bone health, cognitive function and brain health, skin health, and cell membrane health.

Symptoms of poor bile flow are numerous and beyond just digestion related.

By concentrating the bile, the gall bladder creates a more potent fat emulsifier and digestive aid!

The timing of bile release is also very important. Thanks to the signal from cholecystokinin, when fat and protein enter the upper small intestines (aka duodenum), the gallbladder contracts and releases bile into the duodenum. The bile then mixes with the food bolus to aid in digestion

Without a gallbladder and the proper concentration and timed release of bile, various components of digestion and nutrient absorption would be compromised and in turn various facets of health can be affected.

The whole let’s just wait till your health really takes a nose dive and do nothing in the meantime to address what caused and will CONTINUE to cause stone formation, and only offer surgery to remove a vital organ when it becomes an emergency situation, is in my opinion, terrible health advice 🙅🏼‍♀️🙅🏼‍♀️🙅🏼‍♀️

Downstream care like surgery in a urgent acute emergency situation is super helpful when things are extreme, but what about upstream support? What about trying to prevent the need for surgery? What about addressing why and where things broke down that led to a hard stone being formed in the first place? 🤔

If you are on the receive end of “don’t worry till it gets bad and then we’ll cut out your organ”, go seek the help of a naturopathic doctor or functional medicinal doctor that knows what to do about gall stones. Together, you can work on preventing things from becoming worse and requiring surgery and address the reasons a calcified stone formed in the first place

Because from my point of view, if a stone has calcified enough to be seen on an ultrasound, there is already enough of a problem. And never mind the likely hundreds (or more) of stones that are not hardened or calcified that don’t show up on ultrasound that can plug up liver and gallbladder ducts and compromise organ function, and have the potential to get bigger and calcified and cause more of an emergency issue at some point.
